Aqua has announced that the group is officially parting ways nearly three decades after the release of their worldwide hit Barbie Girl.

Aqua, the Danish Eurodance band behind the 1997 smash hit Barbie Girl, revealed in an Instagram post that the group has decided to split up.
After nearly 30 years in the music business, Aqua has announced the end of its journey as a performing band.
The Danish Eurodance group, best known for the 1997 global hit Barbie Girl, shared the news in an Instagram statement posted on May 18. In the message, the band explained that after many unforgettable years together, they felt it was the right time to bring AQUA’s chapter as a live act to a close.
The members reflected on how deeply the group shaped their lives, saying they experienced far more success and adventure than they ever imagined possible. They recalled traveling around the world, connecting with fans everywhere, and creating memories they will always treasure.
According to the band, spending so many years together also taught them the importance of knowing when to preserve what they built. They said they wanted to say goodbye while their appreciation for the music, their story, and one another still remained strong.
The heartfelt statement concluded with gratitude toward fans who supported them throughout the last three decades, and it was signed by members Søren, Lene, and René.
Aqua first rose to international fame with their debut album Aquarium, which featured Barbie Girl, the playful and controversial track known for lyrics such as “I’m a blonde bimbo girl in a fantasy world.”
The song later became the center of a legal dispute when Mattel sued the band’s label, MCA Records, in 2000. Mattel argued that the song infringed on Barbie’s trademark and portrayed the doll in a sexualized way. However, the lawsuit was dismissed in 2002 after a court determined the song qualified as parody protected under the First Amendment. Ironically, Mattel would later use the track in Barbie-related promotional content.
The group experienced a major revival in 2023 when Barbie Girl was reimagined by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice for the Barbie movie soundtrack. The renewed attention introduced Aqua to a new generation of listeners and led to fresh success in the United States, including a Top 10 hit, two Grammy nominations, a U.S. tour, and a performance slot on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest in 2024.
