Chappell Roan Shares the Motivational Advice Elton John Gave Her During Her Eventful Breakout Year

Chappell Roan has found a supportive friend in Elton John.
On Wednesday, Dec. 11, the “Rocket Man” singer was named TIME’s Icon of the Year. In honor of this achievement, Roan shared a meaningful piece of advice John had given her.
“The advice he gave me was that the songs will come,” Roan, 26, recalled about the 77-year-old artist.
She added, “He thought he wouldn’t have the ideas, but they were always there. He just had to let them come to him. So that’s a good reminder.”
In the same interview, the “Red Wine Supernova” singer praised John for his “perfectly, masterfully written songs.”
“That’s what makes his songs resonate with millions, even billions, of people,” she added, speaking about his music.
Back in June, the “Tiny Dancer” hitmaker posted a photo on Instagram from a pizza party with Roan.
“The BEST evening of pizza and outrageous laughter with the fiercely fabulous @chappellroan,” John wrote in the caption alongside the heartwarming photo. “Love her, love her, love her 🚀❤️🌈.”
In the interview, the “Casual” singer described her swift rise to fame as both “pretty overwhelming” and “affirming.”
She shared, “Pushing through the tough times is worth it.”
In another part of the TIME interview, his “Cold Heart” collaborator, Dua Lipa, spoke about their partnership and expressed her admiration for John.
“When Elton and David reached out to me about the collaboration, it was because of our friendship. And of course, singing alongside one of my musical idols was a no-brainer,” said the “Levitating” singer. “His music has been the soundtrack to my life from the very start.”
On his legacy, John reflected on how he hopes to be remembered, saying he wants people to recall that he “tried to change the world”: “If people remember that we tried to change the world a little bit, we were kind, we tried to help people… And then, apart from that, there was the music.”
