Chris Martin took a lighthearted approach to a recent viral incident during Coldplay’s latest concert, gently joking with fans after a kiss cam moment from an earlier show gained widespread attention.
On Saturday, July 19, the 48-year-old frontman and his band performed at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin. This marked their first Music of the Spheres World Tour appearance since their July 16 show at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, where a man and woman unintentionally found themselves in the spotlight.
That unexpected moment—captured on the stadium’s big screen—sparked buzz online after the pair’s awkward response to being shown together led fans to speculate about their relationship.
Addressing the crowd in Madison, Martin introduced the screen segment with a warm welcome. “We want to say hello to some of you,” he said, met by enthusiastic cheers in a fan-filmed video. “So, we’re going to use our cameras and show a few of you on the big screen.”
With a grin, he then offered a playful piece of advice: “If you haven’t done your makeup yet, now’s the time.”
According to the fan who shared the footage on X (formerly Twitter), no couples were shown during the segment that night—possibly a deliberate move after the earlier viral incident.
At the July 16 show, the unidentified couple became the center of online chatter following their surprised and uneasy expressions when the camera landed on them. Martin, watching from the stage, joked in the moment: “Oh, look at these two. You’re okay.” He added with a laugh, “What? Either they’re having an affair, or they’re just very shy.”
Later in the performance, Martin reportedly addressed the awkwardness, saying, “Holy s—. I hope we didn’t do something bad,” according to The Guardian.
The moment took an unexpected turn when the man in the clip was identified as Andy Byron, CEO of the tech firm Astronomer. The company posted on LinkedIn that its board had launched a formal investigation, emphasizing the importance of leadership accountability. While the post did not confirm who appeared in the video, speculation continued online.
Byron ultimately stepped down from his role. On July 19, Astronomer confirmed his resignation in a statement on X, saying the board had accepted it and reaffirming the company’s core values. Co-founder and Chief Product Officer Pete DeJoy will act as interim CEO while the company searches for a new leader.
“While awareness of our company may have shifted overnight, our mission remains the same,” the company wrote, referring to its ongoing work in the DataOps and AI space.
Axios later reported that the delay in Astronomer’s public response stemmed in part from Byron’s resignation negotiations. When asked about the report, a company spokesperson declined to comment. Byron has not responded to media inquiries, and the woman seen in the viral footage has not been identified.
Coldplay’s next stop on the tour is Nashville’s Nissan Stadium on Tuesday, July 22, with upcoming shows scheduled in Miami, London, and other major cities through early September.
