Cyndi Lauper, 71, Shares Why She’s Not Planning to Rest Following Her Farewell Tour

Lauper speaks to PEOPLE regarding the upcoming summer segment of her Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour.
Cyndi Lauper isn’t ready to slow down just yet.
The Grammy-winning artist, 71, recently revealed she’s extending her Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour with additional North American dates running from July 15 to August 20.
The tour originally kicked off last year, with Lauper performing across the United States, Canada, and Europe — many of which marked her return to headlining arenas since her True Colors World Tour in the mid-’80s.
This time, Lauper will perform in several outdoor amphitheaters, giving fans the chance to enjoy memorable evenings under the stars while singing along to her iconic hits like “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”, “Time After Time”, and more.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Lauper shared what fans can expect from the upcoming shows, how this leg will differ from the previous one, and why she’s not planning to take a break once the tour wraps up.
Cyndi Lauper: I’ve always wanted to do something like this. The last time I did it was back in 1986, so I thought, “You know what? If I’m going to wrap things up, I’m going to do it in a big way.” Right now, I’m feeling strong, and my voice is powerful. My songs aren’t exactly easy to sing, so staying in shape is important. I’ll be 72 soon, and I don’t want to be 80 with a walker shouting, “Come on, girls!” I want to feel proud of what I’m doing — and I do.
I’m grateful to have partnered with Brian Burke, the creative director, to bring this vision to life. It’s truly performance art, filled with visuals throughout. Honestly, combining visual art with music has always been my dream. With this tour, I’m excited to bring people together — not to celebrate who I used to be, but who I am now, who we all are now. It’s about connection, creating joy, and blending art with it — making people laugh, maybe even shed a few tears.
Lauper: The shows might be a bit different this time because I’m trying to visit places I never had the chance to before. When you’re booking arenas, you’re not just competing with other concerts but also with all the sporting events, so I couldn’t reach every city. There are so many places across the U.S. where I never got to say goodbye.
I’m mostly heading to spots I missed — except for California. I’m playing the Hollywood Bowl, mainly because my sister and her wife enjoy going there for picnics, so it’s a family thing. Plus, I’m a little superstitious… I once stepped on a bee there, so it feels like a must.
