The singer mentioned she had raised concerns about the song selection beforehand and jokingly clarified that it wasn’t her decision.

Demi Lovato is setting the record straight about her widely discussed performance of “Heart Attack” at an American Heart Association event.

Back in 2014, the singer performed her 2013 hit during the organization’s Go Red for Women Red Dress Collection show—an appearance that surprised many, given the song’s title and the event’s focus on heart health.

During a recent interview on The Elvis Duran Show on March 19, Lovato explained that the song choice wasn’t actually up to her. She recalled questioning whether it was appropriate beforehand, mentioning that she raised concerns about it not matching the tone of the event. However, she said she was told that it was what the audience wanted, so she went along with it. Later, when people criticized the decision online, Lovato humorously defended herself, emphasizing that she had already pointed out the issue in advance.

At the time, a representative for Lovato told Entertainment Weekly that she also spoke during the event about the connection between mental and heart health. The rep described the moment as meaningful and supportive, noting that Lovato introduced the performance by explaining her reasoning and addressing the audience with a heartfelt message.

Elsewhere in the interview, Lovato reflected on what advice she would give to her younger self. She shared that despite difficult experiences—whether related to recovery from an eating disorder or maintaining sobriety—it’s possible to find happiness again and build a fulfilling life. She expressed that she wishes she had heard that encouragement during her earlier struggles.

The singer of “Cool for the Summer” is also preparing to release her first cookbook, One Plate at a Time: Recipes for Finding Freedom with Food, on March 31. Having openly discussed her past battle with bulimia, Lovato said her relationship with food has been complex, but she has made significant progress and now views cooking as a meaningful form of expression and care.
