Goo Goo Dolls’ John Rzeznik Reflects on What Impressed Him Most About Taylor Swift During the Speak Now Tour

Goo Goo Dolls lead singer John Rzeznik is looking back on his memorable collaboration with Taylor Swift during her Speak Now tour.
While attending the American Music Awards in Las Vegas on May 25, the 60-year-old musician reflected on what impressed him most about Swift when they worked together in 2011.
Although Swift was only in her early twenties at the time, Rzeznik recalled being struck by her professionalism and organization. He admitted he had expected members of her team to handle guest-related matters, but instead, Swift took the initiative herself, leaving him with the impression that she was exceptionally capable and in control.
The pair shared the stage during a New York City stop on Swift’s Speak Now tour, where they performed the Goo Goo Dolls’ iconic hit “Iris.” Swift praised the track at the time, describing it as one of the greatest songs ever written.
Fifteen years later, “Iris” earned a nomination for Best Throwback Song at the 2026 AMAs. Originally released in 1998, the song was previously recognized with nominations for Song of the Year and Record of the Year at the 1999 Grammy Awards.
Reflecting on the song’s lasting appeal, Rzeznik said it initially gained attention through its connection to the film City of Angels, but its popularity ultimately outlived the movie itself. He noted that the track continued to resonate with listeners over the years and gained even more momentum as artists—including Swift—performed their own versions.
When asked whether he would consider performing at Swift’s future wedding to Travis Kelce, Rzeznik said he would gladly take part if he received an invitation.
Rzeznik attended the awards ceremony alongside fellow Goo Goo Dolls member Robby Takac, and both musicians brought their daughters to the event. The group posed together on the red carpet before the show.
Rzeznik’s daughter, Liliana, is 9 years old and shares him with his wife, Melina Gallo. Takac’s 14-year-old daughter, Hana, is from his marriage to Miyoko Takac.
In a previous interview with PEOPLE in 2019, Rzeznik discussed how becoming a father had transformed life on the road for both him and Takac, bringing a different perspective to their years of touring.
