Jennifer Lopez Shares That She Was Originally Meant to Join a Legendary MTV VMAs Performance

Jennifer Lopez recently revealed that she was originally slated to take part in one of the most memorable performances in MTV Video Music Awards history.
During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on June 8, the actress and singer shared that she had been involved in the planning stages of Madonna’s headline-making 2003 VMAs performance alongside Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
Lopez, now 56, explained that she was unable to appear at the event because she was filming Shall We Dance? at the time. According to her, production commitments prevented her from leaving the set to participate in the live show.
She recalled that preparations for the performance had already begun, including rehearsals with Madonna and Spears. Lopez even visited Madonna’s home, where the trio spent time practicing music together. She remembered Madonna playing guitar while they sang and worked through ideas for the upcoming performance.
When asked whether Madonna’s famous onstage kiss was rehearsed beforehand, Lopez said it was not. However, she noted that Madonna had already discussed the concept and outlined her vision for the production. Lopez remembered that the performance involved a wedding-themed storyline, with Madonna portraying the groom while the other performers sang. She added that she had originally been assigned to make the first entrance and perform “Like a Virgin.”
Although some details of the planned routine have faded from her memory, Lopez confirmed that she was intended to play a significant role in the production before scheduling conflicts forced her to withdraw.
Despite making time on a weekend to meet with Madonna and prepare for the show, Lopez ultimately could not secure permission to step away from filming obligations. As a result, she missed the opportunity to appear in the performance.
The now-iconic 2003 VMAs segment began with Britney Spears performing “Like a Virgin,” followed by Christina Aguilera joining her on stage. Madonna later emerged to perform her song “Hollywood.” The performance became one of the most talked-about moments in awards-show history when Madonna shared onstage kisses with both Spears and Aguilera. Rapper Missy Elliott then joined the act to perform portions of her hit track “Work It.”
