During a performance for Dolce & Gabbana in Sicily, the singer offered an honest glimpse into her views on love and revealed what she finds most attractive in a romantic partner.
Jennifer Lopez made it clear that expensive presents and lavish lifestyles are not what impress her most in a relationship.
Just days before celebrating her 57th birthday on July 24, the singer and actress shared her refreshingly honest thoughts on romance while performing at a Dolce & Gabbana event held at Isola Bella in Taormina, Sicily, on July 16.
During the performance, the 56-year-old entertainer joked with her male backup dancers before launching into a playful conversation about love, self-reliance and the qualities she truly values in a partner. According to videos posted on Instagram by a fashion historian, Lopez humorously asked one dancer to adjust her hair before dismissing the others.
She joked that she didn’t need anyone’s money or extravagant gifts, making it clear that material wealth isn’t what she looks for in a relationship.
Wearing a sparkling, jewel-encrusted bodysuit, Lopez used the lighthearted exchange to highlight her belief in financial independence and self-confidence. Laughing, she acknowledged that many people assume she enjoys an extravagant lifestyle because of her glamorous image, but pointed out that she has earned her own success and doesn’t rely on anyone else to provide for her.
For the evening, Lopez wore a custom Dolce & Gabbana sunshine-yellow silk chiffon gown featuring a plunging neckline, dramatic thigh-high slits and a jeweled floral-inspired bodice. She completed the elegant look with a gemstone-embellished cape before changing into a white lace bodysuit styled with a cropped faux-fur bolero made from alpaca wool and silk, along with crystal-covered white satin over-the-knee boots.
She later reinforced her message by telling the audience that while she certainly enjoys luxury, she is perfectly capable of providing it for herself. Addressing the women in attendance, Lopez said they don’t need someone else to buy them things, although thoughtful gestures are always appreciated.
Her comments come after decades of public fascination with her personal life. Lopez has been married four times, beginning with Ojani Noa from 1997 to 1998, followed by Cris Judd from 2001 to 2003. She later married singer Marc Anthony in 2004, and together they welcomed twins, Max and Emme, before ending their marriage in 2014.
Her relationship with Ben Affleck also drew widespread attention. After ending their first engagement in the early 2000s, the couple reunited nearly 20 years later and married in 2022 before separating in 2024. Their divorce was finalized in January 2025. Lopez was also previously engaged to former New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez before the couple split in 2021.
Throughout her performance, Lopez’s message remained consistent: genuine attraction isn’t defined by wealth or luxury. Instead, she suggested that confidence, independence and authenticity are far more meaningful qualities in a partner than expensive gifts or grand displays of wealth.
