Jennifer Lopez’s team expressed concerns that participating in American Idol would reduce her status to that of a “just a reality star.” Despite this advice, she followed her intuition and decided to join the show anyway.

Jennifer Lopez served as a judge on American Idol during seasons 10 through 11 and again from seasons 13 to 15.
Becoming a judge on American Idol was a bold decision for Jennifer Lopez, but her instincts led her to pursue it.
In a conversation with Nikki Glaser for Interview Magazine, published on October 9, Lopez shared her thoughts on her choice to join the singing competition. “I’m willing to take risks because I trust that they will pay off,” Lopez, 55, explained. “I had already starred in major films and released albums, and now I was being offered a role in reality TV. I hadn’t worked for a couple of years after having my kids.”
She went on to say, “American Idol was a major show at that time. Ultimately, it came down to considering what I could contribute. Even when all my advisors warned me against it, saying, ‘Don’t do this; you’ll just be seen as a reality star,’ I followed my gut.”
At the time, the concept of joining American Idol was often “looked down upon,” and her team cautioned her that “nobody will ever hire you for a movie again.” Despite this, she remained firm in her decision.
“I thought, ‘No, that’s not what’s going to happen. I believe I have something valuable to offer,’” she reflected. “I love music, and I enjoy mentoring others. I wanted to impart the knowledge I had about the industry. It became more about considering, ‘What can I achieve with this opportunity?’”
Since then, the “On the Floor” singer has consistently relied on her instincts for every business choice, and it has proven to be successful.
“When I’m making decisions, even if they might not seem like the best choice to everyone else, if I feel strongly about it, no one can change my mind. This was the case when I decided to go to Vegas,” Lopez said, referring to her residency that began in 2016. “People told me, ‘That’s where entertainers go to die,’ but I believed otherwise. It opened up a whole new chapter in my life.”
Lopez first joined the American Idol judging panel in season 10 and remained for two consecutive seasons. After taking a break, she returned to the show for three additional seasons to share her musical expertise with the contestants.
By that time, Lopez had been in the spotlight for decades and believed that “people knew who I was, like they could feel my heart.” However, joining the show made her realize that “they really didn’t.”
“They recognized, ‘Oh, she’s a person who loves music, is very emotional, and cares,’ which made me feel more relatable to them,” she shared.
She further expressed, “Being part of Idol and having that be a part of my legacy, being on one of the greatest television shows ever, feels like such a blessing.”
