John Legend Breaks Away From His Signature Piano Ballads With His New Album Muse

John Legend’s upcoming album Muse was produced entirely by Grammy-winning musician and longtime friend Pharrell Williams, marking their first major project together after more than two decades of friendship.
John Legend is preparing to enter a new musical era with his upcoming album Muse, which promises to explore a sound beyond the piano-centered ballads that have become closely associated with his career.
The 47-year-old singer-songwriter announced the project on Sept. 8, describing the album as an opportunity to experiment with sounds that feel “fresh and new.” The record was produced and co-written by Grammy-winning musician Pharrell Williams, who has been a longtime friend of Legend.
Although the two have known each other for more than 20 years, Muse marks their first full collaboration. The album is described as an expansive, cinematic project that brings together a wide range of Black musical traditions, including gospel, classic standards, doo-wop, soul, Afrobeat and hip-hop.
Legend and Williams created the project in Paris, working from the Louis Vuitton headquarters, where Williams serves as the fashion house’s men’s creative director. For Legend, finally working alongside his longtime friend was something that felt overdue.
The musicians also wanted the album to embody what they described as a “Black James Bond aesthetic.” Their creative influences included legendary performers such as Nina Simone, Nat King Cole and Marvin Gaye. By blending those inspirations with elements of their own musical backgrounds, Legend and Williams developed a sound that represented a departure from Legend’s established formula.
“While my repertoire has always been diverse, piano-driven ballads have received the most attention throughout my career,” Legend explained. He added that he wanted to break away from that familiar approach and explore something new.
Muse will feature 16 tracks in total, with Williams appearing on six of them: “Muse,” “Her,” “Get Back,” “Are You OK,” “Next Time” and “Fireflies.”
The remaining songs are “Pray for Ya,” “Her Introduction,” “Daylight,” “Under the Bridge Introduction,” “Under the Bridge,” “Bodies on the Floor – Taps Introduction,” “Bodies on the Floor (ft. Clipse),” “Doing Me,” “Everything” and “Sail Off.”
