Justin Long takes center stage in Ariana Grande’s latest music video, portraying a man who endures a series of increasingly disastrous events while struggling to move on from a past relationship.
Released on June 1, the visual for “Hate That I Made You Love Me” was directed by Christian Breslauer and follows Long through a surreal and darkly comedic storyline. The video opens with the actor digging a grave before driving away. While on the road, he attempts to discard a small photograph of Grande, but her ghostly presence continues to follow him. Distracted by the apparition, he loses control of his vehicle and crashes, though he unexpectedly survives the wreck.
As the song plays, Grande delivers lyrics reflecting on the consequences of love and emotional attachment, while her spectral character remains a constant presence throughout Long’s ordeal.
The chaos escalates when Long begins clearing out what appears to be a shared apartment. During the process, he accidentally sets himself on fire while throwing away belongings connected to the relationship. Grande silently observes from a distance as he struggles through the mishap.
After escaping the blaze, Long later visits a diner, where he is shocked to discover multiple versions of Grande surrounding him. The unsettling encounter leads him back to the grave site, where he uncovers a hidden underground chamber. Moments later, Grande appears holding a shovel and proceeds to cover the grave, trapping him beneath the earth.
“Hate That I Made You Love Me” arrived on May 29 as the lead single from Grande’s forthcoming album, Petal. The singer first announced the project in April, describing it as a symbol of growth, resilience, and finding life in difficult circumstances.
In a video shared on social media in early May, Grande expanded on the album’s themes, explaining that the music explores letting go of unhealthy attachments, whether they stem from internal struggles, outside influences, or situations that no longer contribute positively to her life. She noted that listeners are free to interpret the songs through their own experiences.
Grande also characterized the record as more uninhibited than her previous work, revealing that it allowed her to express emotions and perspectives she had previously been reluctant to explore.
