Kelly Clarkson is back in Las Vegas—and the energy is still electric, despite a slightly rocky start.
The 43-year-old singer launched her latest residency at Caesars Palace’s Colosseum on Friday, July 11. This marks her second Vegas residency in two years.
Although July 11 wasn’t originally scheduled as opening night, it became just that after Clarkson had to cancel two performances the previous weekend due to illness. The shows, originally set for July 4, were called off just hours before showtime in order to safeguard her vocal health.
Addressing the audience early in the night, Clarkson apologized for the sudden cancellations. “I’m really sorry if you had tickets last weekend. Sometimes our bodies don’t cooperate, and we get sick—it happens,” she told fans.
Taking a tequila shot with a concertgoer, Clarkson added with a laugh, “I’m celebrating tonight because I had to cancel last weekend. I was miserable—I cried. I felt terrible. So I’m extra happy to be here now.”
In an Instagram post made at the time of the cancellations, Clarkson explained that the intense rehearsal schedule had strained her voice. A source later told PEOPLE that she was “devastated” by the decision, as she had not wanted to cancel any shows.
The new residency, titled Studio Sessions, was crafted with intimacy in mind. Clarkson’s goal was to create a show that felt more like an open studio session than a glitzy Vegas spectacle. Stripped of flashy production, the performance featured Clarkson surrounded by her band in a casual, creative setting—aiming to make thousands in the audience feel like part of the music-making process.
Throughout most of the show, Clarkson kept it low-key in jeans and a Stevie Nicks tee. She only changed into a more glamorous outfit for the encore, during which she joked, “I’m a sweaty mother right now!”
The two-hour setlist included both deep cuts like “Sober” and “Tight Rope,” as well as chart-topping hits like “Stronger” and “My Life Would Suck Without You.” She also performed her latest single, “Where Have You Been,” and paid tribute to fellow Caesars Palace performer Dolly Parton with a cover.
At one point during the show, Clarkson revealed a significant development in her music career: she recently sold a portion of her song catalog.
“I just sold part of my catalog,” she shared. “And while going through that process, I realized how much of it wouldn’t exist without this guy behind the piano.” She was referring to Jason Halbert, her longtime musical director and collaborator dating back to her American Idol beginnings.
Clarkson did not reveal the buyer or how much of her catalog she sold.
