Kelly Clarkson Marks 23 Years Since Her American Idol Win with Heartfelt Tribute
Kelly Clarkson is looking back on a life-changing moment.
On Thursday, Sept. 4, the 43-year-old singer celebrated the 23rd anniversary of her American Idol victory with a touching Instagram post.
Clarkson, who became the show’s very first winner in 2002, thanked the fans who helped her claim the title. “To everyone that took time 23 years ago to call in and vote for me, thank you 🙏,” she wrote. “Winning American Idol changed my life and I will be forever grateful for all of you that have supported me for so many years.”
She continued, “It is a gift to find your purpose and passion, and to be able to make a living doing it is the cherry on top. Thank you, always.”
The official American Idol Instagram page later reshared her message on its Stories with the caption: “THIS is what it’s all about, @kellyclarkson. You were an icon from the start. We will always love you.”
Clarkson has often reflected on her win over the years. When the show marked its 20th anniversary in 2022, she posted that the experience had “forever changed the course of my life.” Earlier this year, she opened up further during an appearance on Kylie Kelce’s Not Gonna Lie podcast, admitting she didn’t initially realize the competition was a television series.
“For all of us in that first season, I literally didn’t … I didn’t even know it was a TV show until my third audition,” she explained. “We were just trying to pay our bills. We thought, ‘Maybe I’ll meet someone, maybe this will lead to something.’ Nobody had any idea it would become what it did.”
She recalled being just 19 at the time: “We were literally kids just trying to make rent, pay my electric bill, and cover the deductible on my car that had been wrecked. It was a totally different time.”
Since her victory, Clarkson has built an award-winning career with 10 studio albums, 56 singles, 17 Grammy nominations, and three Grammy wins. Beyond music, she has served as a coach on The Voice—first from seasons 14 to 21, returning again for season 23, and slated to appear in the upcoming 29th season. She also continues to host her Emmy-winning daytime talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show, and will launch a new project this fall, Songs & Stories with Kelly Clarkson.
Recently, Clarkson briefly stepped away from The Kelly Clarkson Show following the death of her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, who passed from melanoma complications on Aug. 7.
