Kelly Clarkson overlooked the 22nd anniversary of her American Idol victory, admitting, “I didn’t even realize what day it was.”

Kelly Clarkson’s schedule is much busier now than it was back in 2002 when she won American Idol. The 42-year-old “Miss Independent” singer clinched victory in the inaugural season of the hit reality singing competition on September 4, a milestone she was reminded of by a staff member named Andy from The Kelly Clarkson Show. In a funny video shared on the show’s social media, Andy says, “Hey Kel, it’s September 4th,” prompting Clarkson to realize the significance of the date.

“It is September 4th,” Clarkson responded casually.
“On this day 22 years ago…” Andy continued, prompting Clarkson to burst into laughter.
“Oh my God,” she said. “When you mentioned that date, I got worried, like, ‘Did I miss an anniversary?’ I did!”
Reflecting on the moment, Clarkson added, “22 years since winning American Idol. You know what? And I’m back on TV. Who would’ve thought?”
The “Since U Been Gone” artist described the anniversary as an “exciting” moment but explained her forgetfulness, saying, “I didn’t even realize what day it was. I’m focused on my kids’ first day of school tomorrow.”
Clarkson had previously looked back on her American Idol victory during the 20th anniversary in 2022, noting on Instagram that the win “forever changed the course of my life.”
She continued, “That moment was the door that opened up so much access and opportunity, and creative partnerships that I will be grateful for all of my days. The family and friendships I have created over these 20 years in music and TV are priceless to me.”
Clarkson also shared, “We only get so many trips around the sun, and while I am proud and feel abundantly blessed for the successes and failures I’ve learned from, I am most proud and grateful for those friends who have become family. Their support and understanding have been invaluable to me when I felt lost.”
