The pop stars officially released their much-anticipated collaboration on Friday.
After days of anticipation, Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars have released their much-anticipated duet. On Friday, Aug. 16, the global pop stars unveiled their new single, “Die with a Smile,” along with a vintage-inspired music video. The video opens with Mars singing and playing the guitar, before shifting to reveal Gaga at a piano, cigarette in hand. Dressed in coordinating denim and red outfits, the duo delivers perfect harmonies with a backing band. The video features occasional flashing lights to enhance the intimate atmosphere, and Gaga even steps away from the piano to dance at one point.
Gaga, 38, and Mars, 38, confirmed their collaboration just hours before its release, posting the single’s cover artwork on social media. The image features them in matching red and blue rodeo outfits.
“WHILE YOU WAIT TILL LG7…’DIE WITH A SMILE’ a duet with @brunomars ❤️🔥,” the “Bad Romance” singer wrote in an Instagram post on Thursday, hinting at her upcoming seventh studio album.
Earlier in the week, Gaga sparked speculation by sharing a teaser clip on X (formerly Twitter) of her playing a slow piano medley while wearing a shirt with Mars’ face on it. Mars further fueled the excitement by quoting the post with a wide-eyed emoji.
“Die with a Smile” is the first official collaboration between Mars and Gaga, though they previously shared the stage at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in Paris in 2016, where they performed a medley with The Weeknd.
For Mars, this new single marks his first solo release in several years. His last solo album was 2016’s 24K Magic. He did team up with Anderson .Paak in 2021 to form the Grammy-winning group Silk Sonic, releasing a single album, An Evening with Silk Sonic.
Gaga hasn’t released a new solo album since 2020’s Chromatica, which inspired her 2022 tour that was featured in a documentary earlier this year. She did collaborate with the late Tony Bennett on their 2021 jazz album, Love for Sale, before his passing in July 2023.
However, her solo music drought might be ending soon. The “Poker Face” singer has been teasing her upcoming seventh studio album (LG7) for weeks. In mid-July, she posted photos of herself in the studio on Instagram, expressing her excitement about making new music. She described the experience as meditative and shared her anticipation for fans to hear her new work.
According to Billboard, the 13-time Grammy winner delighted fans in Paris by previewing snippets from her upcoming album after her performance at the 2024 Olympic Games opening ceremony on July 26.
In her Instagram Stories, she shared, “I’m so deeply touched by my French fans this week outside the hotel. I’m gonna come out and say goodbye tonight with a few seconds of #LG7.” She then went outside to play the new music for her fans.
A source told PEOPLE last month that Gaga has “never been happier” with the music she’s currently recording, noting, “She’s feeling the most creative she’s ever been.”
