The singer also spoke out about the challenges women continue to face under what she described as a “system of oppression,” adding that acts of cruelty have reached unprecedented levels.
Lizzo recently revealed that she has put on 20 pounds over the past year, describing the change as part of her ongoing commitment to improving her overall health and well-being.
In an interview with The Guardian, the 38-year-old “Truth Hurts” performer explained that her decision to prioritize wellness in 2023 was influenced by several factors rather than a single event. She emphasized that people often search for one simple explanation, even though multiple reasons can exist at the same time.
According to Lizzo, her weight had begun to affect her physically, leading to joint pain and discomfort. She also stepped away from social media, leaving her with more time to focus on music and self-reflection. As a result, she directed her energy toward aspects of her life she could manage, including her health, daily habits, and personal routines. She said those experiences have shaped who she is today.
The singer also acknowledged that she has gained around 20 pounds since last year, joking that people are now free to ask her about weight gain as well.
Although Lizzo reached her personal weight target in January 2025, she said she always expected her body to change over time. She noted that fluctuations are natural and can happen depending on the choices she makes in her everyday life, adding that she has become comfortable with those changes.
Beyond discussing her own body, Lizzo criticized the unrealistic standards placed on women, particularly those in the public eye. She argued that society creates constant pressure for women to meet impossible beauty expectations, encouraging them to feel dissatisfied with themselves while promoting products and false ideals as solutions.
She added that this culture of pressure has become stronger than ever and expressed concern about its impact on those who experience it. Rather than blaming individuals, Lizzo believes attention should be directed toward the systems and platforms that reinforce harmful beauty standards. She encouraged people to respond with compassion, understanding, and support instead of judgment.
Lizzo also suggested that modern culture increasingly rewards negativity. She observed that people often compete to make the harshest or most cutting remarks online, creating an environment where cruelty receives the most attention and kindness is frequently overlooked.
