Mariah Carey Shares Why She Avoids Calling Herself a “Legend,” Saying She’s Still Focused on Her Work

Carey explained to Billboard in a recent cover story interview that people often attach their own meanings to the words they use.
Mariah Carey may be widely regarded as a music icon, but she doesn’t personally embrace the title.
In a recent Billboard cover story, the 56-year-old singer reflected on her decades-long career, philanthropic work, and her upcoming recognition as MusiCares’ 2026 Person of the Year. Despite her record-breaking achievements—including 19 No. 1 singles and five Grammy Awards—Carey explained why she avoids calling herself a legend.
She shared that words carry different meanings for everyone, adding that she still sees herself as someone actively working and striving rather than resting on past accomplishments.
The Recording Academy’s charitable arm, MusiCares, will honor the “Obsessed” singer at its annual Person of the Year gala on Jan. 30. Carey joins an esteemed list of past recipients that includes the Grateful Dead, Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson, Joni Mitchell, Gloria Estefan, Billy Joel, and Dolly Parton.
In a previous statement, MusiCares executive director Theresa Wolters praised Carey’s impact beyond music, highlighting her consistent efforts to support communities through initiatives such as disaster relief, youth advocacy, and programs that assist those facing limited opportunities. Wolters added that Carey’s work reflects the core mission of MusiCares—building systems of care that help both music professionals and communities flourish.
Carey also discussed with Billboard why giving back remains important to her. Throughout her career, she has supported a wide range of causes, including education, human rights, and LGBTQ+ advocacy.
One recent example came in December 2025, when a custom pink “Protect the Dolls” T-shirt she wore during a performance at a U.K. LGBTQ+ Pride event sold for more than $5,000 at a GLAAD auction benefiting the transgender community.
Carey noted that while her busy schedule sometimes limits how much she can do, philanthropy continues to be a meaningful part of her life, emphasizing the importance of contributing in whatever ways possible.
The MusiCares 2026 Person of the Year event will include tribute performances from artists such as Adam Lambert, Billy Porter, Charlie Puth, Foo Fighters, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Kesha, Laufey, Maggie Rogers, Taylor Momsen, and Teddy Swims, with Jermaine Dupri also set to appear as a DJ.
