Megan Thee Stallion understands the struggles of mental health and is committed to creating a supportive environment for young people to share their experiences.
Earlier this month, the Houston rapper teamed up with the California Department of Public Health for the Never a Bother campaign, a new initiative aimed at preventing youth suicide and raising awareness for California’s young population.
For Megan, mental health has always been a crucial topic. Reflecting on her own darkest times, she emphasizes the importance of having a supportive community.
“As someone who has faced very dark thoughts during some of the toughest moments in my life, having a few good people around me who made me feel loved, heard, and cared for was everything,” the 29-year-old “Mamushi” rapper shared exclusively with PEOPLE.
She adds, “Even when I felt like I was being difficult, I would think, ‘Oh, I’m such a burden. I don’t even want to talk about this with anyone. It would be better if life were different. Life would be better without me.’”
With time, Megan realized those intrusive thoughts weren’t accurate, and she’s thankful that her close friends were always there for her.
“If I can provide that support for someone else or guide them toward helpful resources, I absolutely want to do it because I know how it feels, and it’s not a good place to be. If I can help, that’s what I need to do,” the “HISS” rapper expresses.
Megan also observed that many young people are exposed to “crazy stuff” on social media that can contribute to feelings of depression.
To safeguard her mental health, the “Sweetest Pie” rapper began attending therapy and found relief in working out.
“I started hitting the gym hard. It really helped me create a space to channel my aggression in a healthy way and allowed me to zone out and clear my mind,” she shares.
“I felt like I didn’t even know where to begin when it came to working on myself. After starting therapy, I realized I needed to do something more, and the gym really made a difference for me,” she explains.
On Thursday, Megan released her Prime Video documentary In Her Words, which provides fans with an intimate glimpse into her rise and personal challenges.
“I was in such a dark place that people couldn’t even ask how I was doing without me breaking down in tears. I faced significant struggles with my mental health,” she shares. “I hope that viewers will see… if my favorite artists can endure something like this and emerge stronger, then I can too.”
