Miley Cyrus Remembers Her Final Conversations with Godmother ‘Aunt Dolly’ Parton in Emotional Tribute

Cyrus honored her late godmother, Parton, in a heartfelt Instagram tribute shared on Wednesday, Aug. 26.
The “Flowers” singer took to Instagram on Wednesday, Aug. 26, to share an emotional message honoring Parton, who died the previous day at age 80.
Cyrus, 33, explained that the pain of losing Parton was difficult to put into words. She reflected that some of their most meaningful memories were shared away from the public eye and would remain private, held close between them.
Remembering the advice Parton gave her, Cyrus said she believes her godmother would encourage her to embrace her emotions, turn those feelings into music and continue moving forward with strength. She described Parton as an angel who had always been there for her and revealed that one of their final conversations centered on music and “metamorphosis.”
Cyrus also promised that her love for Parton would never fade and that she would continue striving to make her proud.
She expressed sympathy for Parton’s loved ones, friends and admirers around the world who are now experiencing the loss, adding that they could find reminders of the country icon in the beauty surrounding them.
Cyrus accompanied her tribute with a touching black-and-white photograph of Parton.
Her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, also remembered Parton in an emotional tribute shared the previous evening. He revealed that she had recently told him how much she loved him, saying the feeling was mutual.
Cyrus had a lifelong relationship with Parton. The country legend became close to Billy Ray after the two developed a friendship while touring together during the 1990s. Their relationship eventually became so strong that Billy Ray and his former wife, Tish, asked Parton to become Miley’s godmother following her birth in 1992.
Parton previously recalled being asked to take on the role during an appearance on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show. She said she was honored by the request and that she and Miley naturally developed an especially close relationship over the years.
Their connection extended beyond family ties, with Parton and Cyrus collaborating on numerous occasions throughout Cyrus’ career. Cyrus affectionately referred to the country icon as “Aunt Dolly.”
Parton famously portrayed Miley’s fairy godmother on Hannah Montana, appearing in three episodes of the Disney Channel sitcom between 2006 and 2010. Years later, the pair reunited musically for Parton’s 2023 album Rockstar, recording a new rendition of Cyrus’ 2013 hit “Wrecking Ball.”
Cyrus previously spoke about what she valued most about having Parton in her life. In a 2017 interview with Cosmopolitan, she said one of the greatest lessons was seeing how her godmother consistently treated others with love and respect.
