The actor from School of Rock has just set a new record on the Billboard Hot 100 with his viral song, “Steve’s Lava Chicken,” from A Minecraft Movie. At just 34 seconds long, it has become the shortest track by duration to ever make it onto the Hot 100 in the chart’s nearly 70-year history.
Written by Black, 55, alongside the film’s director, Jared Hess, “Steve’s Lava Chicken” humorously explores the intriguing question of what happens when hot lava meets chicken. The answer? Steve’s Lava Chicken, naturally.
With the quirky sounds of a chicken clucking and the sizzle — delivered with an intentionally over-the-top emphasis that will be stuck in your head all day — Black’s Steve sings about the tasty, boxy treat.
The full lyrics go like this: “La-la-la-lava, ch-ch-ch-chicken/Steve’s Lava Chicken, yeah, it’s tasty as hell/Ooh, mamacita, now you’re ringin’ the bell.”
Black continues with: “Crispy and juicy, now you’re havin’ a snack/Ooh, super spicy, it’s a lava attack.” This catchy tune is sure to stay in fans’ minds for quite some time. For those craving a bit more, there’s an extended version that lasts a full minute and 15 seconds.
“Steve’s Lava Chicken” made its debut at No. 78 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the week of May 3. The previous record holder was Kid Cudi, with his 37-second-long 2020 track “Beautiful Trip.”
Holding the record for the shortest song on Billboard’s Hot 100 isn’t the only milestone A Minecraft Movie has helped Jack Black achieve. The film’s impressive $157 million domestic opening surpassed The Super Mario Bros. Movie, setting a new record for the biggest domestic opening for a video game-based movie.
As of April 27, according to Variety, the movie has grossed $816 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of 2025 so far.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie also featured another viral hit by Black — the song “Peaches,” a tribute to the iconic princess of the video game franchise.
