Olivia Rodrigo has a unique approach to staying hydrated—though it’s for a good reason!
In an interview with PEOPLE on Thursday, April 24, at the Planned Parenthood of Greater New York’s Spring into Action Gala, the 22-year-old “Obsessed” singer opened up about her biggest fear while performing.
“[I’m afraid] I’m going to pee my pants on stage,” Rodrigo admitted during the event at Cipriani South Street in New York City.
When asked about her post-performance routine, Rodrigo shared that she first removes her makeup and then “drinks a ton of water.”
She added, “I’m always scared to drink water before I go on stage.”
Olivia Rodrigo, who has a busy summer of headlining major festivals ahead, including Governors Ball, Bonnaroo, and Glastonbury in June, had previously shared that she was “terrified” before performing on the opening night of her Guts World Tour in February 2024.
Reflecting on the experience, the three-time Grammy Award winner told PEOPLE that October, during the red-carpet premiere of Netflix’s Olivia Rodrigo: Guts World Tour, “I was like, ‘I should have rehearsed more … like I needed three more weeks to rehearse this thing.’ But I was like, ‘Oh well, I’m gonna go on.’”
However, after the performance, Rodrigo had a “beautiful moment” with her parents and friends backstage.
“I remember coming off stage and my mom, my dad, and all my friends were there to support me and just cheering,” she recalled. “We popped champagne. And it was such a beautiful moment. I’ll remember it forever.”
Rodrigo also shared that she was nervous when playing the piano during the earlier shows of the tour. “I was so scared that I was going to mess up,” the “Vampire” singer admitted. “And in the last ones, I feel like I could really just sit into it and enjoy myself.”
Olivia Rodrigo, a longtime advocate for women’s and girls’ rights globally, was honored on Thursday at the Spring into Action Gala in New York City, where she received Planned Parenthood’s Catalyst of Change Award.
During the event, the “Brutal” singer shared with PEOPLE that receiving the award was “incredibly humbling.” She said, “I’m just arriving and looking out at a room that’s full of so many real-life heroes that are fighting for reproductive justice every day.”
“I feel really honored to be included in the midst of them … and I’m just throwing all-around good vibes. I’m just stoked to be here,” she added.
When asked why it’s important for her to speak out using her platform, Rodrigo explained, “The world’s in a crazy place right now, and I just feel like it is a human right to have access to safe, affordable healthcare, and especially right now, that’s under real threat.”
