Olivia Rodrigo opened up about how her experience with genuine romantic love shaped the creation of her upcoming album.
During an interview on On Air with Ryan Seacrest on April 22, the 23-year-old singer explained the meaning behind her third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love. She shared that she began writing the project at a time when she was feeling real love for the first time and was challenged to create a collection of love songs.
To find inspiration, Rodrigo revisited some of her favorite tracks about love and noticed a common thread. Rather than focusing purely on happiness, many of those songs carried elements of sadness, fear, longing, or emotional vulnerability—qualities she believes make them more powerful and moving.
Inspired by that realization, the “Vampire” singer decided to lean into those mixed emotions and craft what she described as a “sad love song” approach for the album.
Rodrigo, who has previously been linked to Louis Partridge and was recently seen with Cameron Winter of the band Geese, is set to release the album on June 12. She has already dropped the lead single, “Drop Dead,” along with its music video.
In a recent interview with British Vogue, Rodrigo admitted that writing from a place of happiness presented a unique creative challenge, noting that feeling content in a relationship doesn’t always spark the same introspection as heartbreak.
When asked whether the album reflects vulnerability or healing, she said it’s not easily defined. Instead, Rodrigo described the project as emotionally layered and complex, filled with a range of feelings that make it “all over the place” in a way she finds meaningful and worth exploring.
