In a cover story for Variety, the pop star revealed that there was considerable doubt surrounding the release of her hit single.

Sabrina Carpenter had to advocate strongly for the release of “Espresso.” In a cover story with Variety on August 6, the 25-year-old pop star shared that there was significant doubt about the decision to release her hit single, which achieved her first top-five placement on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the charts in the U.K., Ireland, and Australia.

“I was entirely on my own in pushing for ‘Espresso’ to be released,” Carpenter explained. “It wasn’t so much my immediate team but rather the higher-ups who questioned the decision.”

She added, “There were many doubts about whether it was the right move, but they eventually put their trust in me. I was glad that I had faith in myself at that time.”

In June, Carpenter shared with Rolling Stone her thoughts on why “Espresso” became such a success.

“My mom keeps asking if I feel like I’m going crazy right now,” she said about the track. “I just love that people get my sense of humor.”

Carpenter explained that the song was inspired by a visit to a crêperie in France, leading to an incredibly catchy chorus, which she unapologetically embraces.

“I decided to pass that burden onto others,” Carpenter playfully remarked.

The “Nonsense” artist also talked about how collaborating with songwriters Steph Jones and Amy Allen, and producer Julian Bunetta, influenced the memorable lyrics.

“That’s how those borderline absurd but hilarious lines come to be,” Carpenter noted. “I’ve really focused on working with the people I love making music with.”

Building on the success of “Espresso,” the “Sue Me” artist announced a partnership with Van Leeuwen to create an espresso-flavored ice cream, which launched on June 28.

“Available starting JUNE 28th!!!!!” Carpenter captioned a photo of her holding a blue ice cream carton adorned with the single’s cover art.

In another photo highlighting the ice cream’s swirl, she referenced her song’s lyrics with the caption: “It is that sweet.”

Carpenter is set to release her sixth studio album, Short n’ Sweet, on August 23.
