Shakira Opens Up About Her Unruly Hair Struggles While Launching Her Haircare Brand Isima: ‘The True Diva in My Life Is My Hair’

Shakira officially launched her haircare brand, Isima, on July 6.

Shakira’s relationship with her hair has been a long and eventful journey.

During the launch event for her debut haircare line, Isima, on Thursday, July 31, the 48-year-old “Hips Don’t Lie” singer reflected on how her personal hair experiences led her to create the brand.

“You know me as a singer, a dancer, and a mother, but beyond all of that, I’m a woman who deals with the same challenges you do—especially when it comes to hair,” she said during her speech at Casita Hollywood.

She humorously added, “I always say my hair has its own personality. The real diva in my life is definitely my hair—it can be quite unpredictable.”

Before launching Isima, Shakira admitted her hair had been through many changes and difficulties.

“I started as a brunette. Then I went blonde—because I heard blondes have more fun. Still not sure if that’s true,” she joked. “Then I tried red before returning to blonde again.”

She went on to explain, “My hair was originally wavy, then it changed to curly. When I became a mom, I experienced a lot of hair loss—then, eventually, it grew back.”

Frustrated by products that didn’t work for her, Shakira began developing Isima four years ago. She first announced the project on June 10 in an Instagram post, where she shared that the brand was “born from my own experiences and carefully developed over years.”

“I didn’t want to just create any haircare brand,” she said at the launch. “I wanted it to mean something—to reflect and celebrate women like me: multifaceted, complex, and authentic.”

She emphasized that Isima is “rooted in science, but also in culture, identity, and most importantly, diversity.”
