Shakira may soon add another major milestone to her career as she has been nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year.
The Grammy-winning Colombian superstar received her first-ever nomination for the honor last month. In an interview with the Associated Press published on Wednesday, March 11, the singer shared her reaction to the recognition.
Shakira, 49, said the nomination left her feeling both grateful and thrilled. She described the moment as incredible and admitted it still feels somewhat unreal to be considered for the prestigious music institution.
Known for hits like Hips Don’t Lie, the singer reflected on how her career has included exploring a variety of musical styles. However, she emphasized that rock music has always been central to her artistic identity. According to Shakira, she initially began her career performing rock and has continued to incorporate the genre throughout her work.
She pointed to several albums in her catalog that highlight her connection to rock influences, including Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, Tiempo Sin Verte and Cómo Dónde y Cuándo.
Shakira explained that rock music has shaped much of her musical personality, noting that it remains a major part of what she listens to and creates. Being nominated alongside legendary artists she admires makes the moment even more meaningful for her. She mentioned groups like The Rolling Stones as among the icons who inspired her career, saying that joining the same institution as such artists would be an extraordinary honor.
The singer also described the nomination as one of those dreams musicians might imagine but rarely expect to actually experience. According to Shakira, the recognition feels like another sign that many of her hopes for the year are coming true.
She added that the nomination means a great deal not only to her but also to fans who have supported her rock-oriented music over the years.
Beyond her personal achievement, Shakira said the moment holds special meaning for the Latin music community. She expressed pride in representing Latina artists, noting that there have been relatively few Latin performers — particularly women from Latin America — recognized in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. For her, being acknowledged while representing her cultural background and lifelong passion for rock music is especially significant.
