Spice Girls Say Their Nicknames Only Took Hold After Global Fame: “We Became Caricatures”

What began as a lighthearted conversation about names eventually became a defining part of the Spice Girls’ appeal.
Melanie “Mel C” Chisholm is reflecting on how one of the Spice Girls’ most recognizable traits came to be.
In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the singer shared that the nicknames defining each member’s public persona weren’t initially a carefully planned branding move. Instead, the idea came from a magazine editor’s suggestion. While revisiting an old Top of the Pops Magazine clipping, Mel C explained that the iconic British music show played a key role in assigning the labels that would later follow her bandmates — Geri Halliwell, Melanie “Mel B” Brown, Victoria Beckham, and Emma Bunton — around the world.
She recalled that Top of the Pops was a cultural staple they all grew up watching and dreaming of appearing on. According to Mel C, the magazine’s editor at the time, Peter Loraine, encouraged the group to adopt nicknames to help introduce them to audiences.
Although the group initially tossed around a few over-the-top ideas, the final names — Scary, Baby, Posh, Ginger, and Sporty — appeared in what Mel C described as a playful, almost insignificant article featuring small spice containers labeled with each nickname.
At the time, the group didn’t give the labels much weight. However, as the Spice Girls’ popularity exploded internationally, especially in the United States, the nicknames quickly became inseparable from their identities.
Mel C explained that while the group initially laughed it off, the constant use of the nicknames by fans and media made them stick. Rather than resist, the band embraced the labels, leaning into the exaggerated versions of themselves that audiences loved.
During the conversation, Mel C also discussed how the group’s distinctive fashion styles developed alongside those personas — a process that involved plenty of experimentation. Early on, management pushed for a unified, coordinated look, but that approach often left at least one member feeling uncomfortable.
She recalled a turning point during rehearsals when Geri questioned why they weren’t simply dressing in ways that felt authentic to each of them. With Mel C in casual sportswear, Geri in bold outfits, and Victoria in polished dresses, the contrast made it clear that individuality was their strength. From that moment on, embracing personal style became central to the Spice Girls’ identity.
