Travis Kelce’s engagement to Taylor Swift was not only a grand gesture but also one of the toughest secrets he’s had to keep.
An insider tells PEOPLE that the 35-year-old Kansas City Chiefs tight end was filled with both nerves and excitement when he asked the “Cruel Summer” singer, also 35, to marry him.
“The proposal was very true to who they are — beautiful, but also simple and relaxed,” the source shares. “That’s exactly how their relationship began: casual dates, just getting to know one another in private.”
The couple confirmed their happy news on Aug. 26 with a joint Instagram post, showing photos from the intimate garden proposal. Kelce got down on one knee and presented Swift with a dazzling old mine brilliant cut diamond, a ring he personally designed alongside Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry.
According to the insider, the “unique and stunning” ring was a perfect fit for the pop superstar. “He worried about whether she’d love it,” the source adds. “He was nervous about the whole proposal, but mostly thrilled. Now he’s just relieved everyone finally knows — it was such a big secret to keep.”
Kelce’s father, Ed, later revealed in an interview with News 5’s John Kosich that the engagement actually happened nearly two weeks before the announcement. “I told him many times it didn’t matter where he did it — on the side of the road, anywhere — it would still be special once he got down on one knee,” Ed explained. “He took her out, said they’d have a glass of wine before dinner, and that’s when he asked her. It was beautiful.”
Ed also shared on Australia’s The Jimmy & Nath Show with Emma that Kelce had taken the traditional step of asking Swift’s father, Scott, for permission a month earlier. “I was talking with Scott, and Travis had gone to him to ask for his blessing,” he recalled. “Scott basically said, ‘Well, what are you waiting for? When’s it happening?’”
