Ed Sheeran, the artist behind “Bad Habits,” disclosed that he ditched his cell phone nearly ten years ago during a recent interview on ‘Therapuss’ with Jake Shane.

Ed Sheeran, known for hits like “Shape of You,” doesn’t spend his days aimlessly scrolling on a cell phone. In fact, the 33-year-old singer hardly has access to one these days, having ditched his mobile device almost a decade ago. During an appearance on the June 5 episode of the talk show Therapuss with Jake Shane, Sheeran revealed, “I haven’t had a phone since 2015.” The revelation came up when Sheeran offered his email address to host Jake Shane instead of exchanging numbers, clarifying, “I don’t have a number… that isn’t me playing you off either.”

Sheeran mentioned that his team recently provided him with a phone for specific occasions when it’s essential, such as when he attended the NBA Eastern Conference Finals sitting courtside with singer Reneé Rapp at a Boston Celtics game on May 23. However, he clarified that the phone is primarily for capturing video content for social media rather than for regular use.

Sheeran explained that his decision to live without a phone stemmed from a realization in December 2015 when he noticed the vast number of contacts he had accumulated since his teenage years. “I had the same number from like age 15, I think,” he shared, “and I got famous, and I had 10,000 contacts in my phone that would just… people would just text the whole time. And I was just constantly in touch with a lot of people.”

As a father of two, married to childhood sweetheart Cherry Seaborn, Sheeran elaborated on the pressures of constantly engaging in text conversations and sometimes failing to respond promptly, which ultimately contributed to his decision to live without a phone. “I feel like with phones, everyone expects you to reply, and if you don’t reply, it’s rude,” he added.

“Sometimes you’re just not in a headscape to reply, you’re busy or doing whatever,” Sheeran continued, “but then you reply, then they reply back… and suddenly you’re in like 40 conversations at once.”

In conclusion, Sheeran emphasized, “I just was losing real-life interaction, so I got rid of [my phone], I got an iPad, I moved everything onto email, which I reply to once a week.” He further stated that his current method of communication is “a better way” to “limit your time” spent texting others all day.

The singer, known for hits like “x,” is currently on a festival circuit, having performed at events such as the Boston Calling music festival and BottleRock Napa Valley Festival in California in May. This month, he is scheduled to perform at Italy’s Lucca Summer Festival, Fan Fest EURO 2024, and the Hurricane Festival in Germany, as well as the Pinkpop Festival in the Netherlands.

His tour continues throughout Europe until September, when he will take the stage at Brazil’s Rock in Rio alongside headliners like Imagine Dragons, Travis Scott, Katy Perry, Shawn Mendes, and others.
