The legendary “Margaritaville” singer passed away on Friday at the age of 76.

Jimmy Buffett’s cause of death has now been disclosed. According to an official obituary on his website, the iconic singer passed away at his residence in Sag Harbor, New York, at the age of 76 on Friday due to Merkel cell skin cancer, which he had been battling for the past four years. Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare and aggressive form of skin cancer, often originating as “red, shiny nodules on the face, hands, and neck,” as described by the MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Despite his health challenges, Buffett continued to perform during his cancer treatments, with his most recent show occurring in July as a surprise appearance in Rhode Island.

Jimmy Buffett is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jane, along with his daughters, Savannah and Sarah, his son, Cameron, two sisters, Laurie and Lucy, his grandson Marley, and his beloved dogs Lola, Kingston, Pepper, Rosie, Ajax, and Kody.

Instead of sending flowers, the Buffett family has requested that fans consider making donations to charitable organizations such as Jimmy Buffett’s Foundation Singing for Change, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, or the MD Anderson Cancer Center in his memory.

A statement released on Jimmy Buffett’s social media and website on Saturday confirmed his passing on Friday night, with his family and friends by his side.

The heartfelt statement, accompanied by a poignant photograph of Buffett seated on a boat, conveyed the news: “Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music, and dogs.” It went on to describe how he lived his life as if it were a song until his very last breath, and expressed that he would be deeply missed by countless people.

In the period leading up to his passing, Buffett, who had an upcoming album titled “Equal Strain on All Parts” scheduled for release later this year, faced health challenges that led to the cancellation or postponement of several of his shows.

Following the news of Jimmy Buffett’s passing, his celebrity friends paid heartfelt tributes to the iconic musician through their social media platforms.

President Joe Biden remembered Buffett as “a poet of paradise,” highlighting his unique talent. Miles Teller referred to the beloved musician as a “legend,” acknowledging his enduring influence.

Andy Cohen, in a statement on X (formerly known as Twitter), posted a picture of Buffett and described him as “the king of cool,” noting that “paradise was wherever Jimmy Buffett was.” Cohen further expressed his feelings on Instagram, saying, “He was everybody’s friend, and Paradise was wherever he was.
