Shakira discussed her experience as a single mother during an interview on Wednesday with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1.

Shakira is relishing her independence.

During an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, the 47-year-old “She Wolf” singer opened up about how being a single mother and residing away from Barcelona has contributed to her artistic growth.

As she navigated her role as a partner to Gerard Piqué — with whom she was in a relationship for 11 years until their separation in 2022 — and as a parent to their two sons, Milan, 11, and Sasha, 9, Shakira found it challenging to strike a balance.

“It was somewhat of a love-hate dynamic because every time I had to dedicate myself to my work in the studio, I felt inadequate,” she reflected. “I sensed that I was neglecting my family. There were moments when I truly struggled to enjoy it. I experienced guilt. I felt torn.”

Now that her children are older and Shakira has been residing in Miami, the dynamic has shifted. “Even though it’s more demanding because now I’m responsible for these two children, these two little ones who rely on me so much. And I’m a single mother, without a husband at home to assist with anything.”

The Latin-pop sensation believes her music career has flourished as a result of being on her own.

“In a way, it’s somewhat liberating not to have a husband because… I don’t know why, but it was weighing me down,” she expresses. “Now I feel motivated to work. I feel inspired to write songs. I feel driven to make music. It’s a compulsive urge of mine that I didn’t experience before.”

Shakira is set to release her 12th studio album, “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” (Women Don’t Cry Anymore), this Friday, marking her first album release in seven years.

According to a press release, the album serves as a testament to “Shakira’s resilience and strength, and music’s ability to transform even the most challenging experiences into precious moments.”

“Creating this body of work has been a transformative process. With each song I wrote, I found myself rebuilding. Through singing them, my tears turned into diamonds, and my vulnerability into resilience,” remarked the “Hips Don’t Lie” artist in a statement.

The 16-track LP will include eight never-before-heard songs, a remix, and seven previously released singles such as “Music Sessions Vol. 53” featuring Bizarrap, “TQG” with Karol G, “Te Felicito” featuring Rauw Alejandro, and “Copa Vacía” with Manuel Turizo.
